Fitness for Seniors: Rekindle Your Passion for Physical Activity

They say that we generally underestimate what we can do in ten years and overestimate what we can do in one. That is why it's important to celebrate the small daily commitments we keep to ourselves instead of getting overly focused on how far we are away from our dream. This is particularly true in fitness for seniors, especially after experiencing a setback such as an illness, fall, injury, surgery, or even a long period of inactivity.

Maybe you loved doing a particular activity and somehow got away from it for a period of time. Does that mean it is now out of reach forever? Often it is not. Sometimes, senior clients use the word ‘anymore’ in physical training where it may not yet be appropriate to do so. As in, “Oh, I can’t play tennis anymore.” It is natural to wonder or to come to this conclusion if it cannot be done today. Plus, as a society, we have generally been taught to lower our expectations about what we will achieve physically as we age.

Luckily, this narrative is changing, and there is a movement of people in their fifties, sixties, seventies, and beyond that are committing to staying fit for life. Does it take time? Absolutely. And that’s okay because almost everything worthwhile does.

There are seniors around the world who are not only restarting activities they once loved in their seventies, eighties, and nineties but also picking up new physical activities that help them get stronger, have fun, and become more functionally fit. Many older adults even join competitive sports in their later years.

So, if you ever catch yourself saying ‘anymore’, and you’re not ready or willing to accept that fate, know that you have the power to change it—and change your life—at any age.
