Top 12 reasons people fall
I hope that you are enjoying the glimpse of spring weather that we are having here in Toronto. A real concern for older adults is the risk of falling. This risk is real and should be activity managed given that 1 out of 3 seniors fall at least once a year. In the wellness toolkit there is an extensive fall prevention presentation
The top 12 reasons that older adults fall are:
- Risk taking behaviour such as using a unstable step ladder or chair to change a light bulb
- Balance and stability issues
- Poor Nutrition
- Dizziness
- Home safety such as lots of throw rugs around the house that are easy to trip on
- Bathroom safety
- Blood Pressure Issues
- Depression
- Leg Strength
- Medication
- Incorrect footwear--there is a great slide in the presentation which outlines what you should look for in a shoe
- Vision issues especially depth perception when going up and down stairs
If you have any questions or live in Toronto or surrounding areas and would like Vintage Fitness to come to your home to work on your leg strength, balance, advise you on footwear and help you feel more energized drop me a note erin@vintagefitness.ca
Good Luck,
Erin
