To achieve your new year’s resolutions you have to believe

It is Friday January 6th and unfortunately many of our new year’s resolutions have already gone by the wayside. I think that is wonderful that so many people want to make positive changes to their health at this time of the year and resist the temptation to be cynical about resolutions.
Vintage Fitness has been energizing the lives of people over 50 in Toronto for 7 years now and we work everyday with clients to set and create fitness goals and plans that are successful. Here are a few tips for you:

  • Believe that success is possible: It is so easy to set a goal for ourselves with our rational brain and not really believe that we can achieve it. The first step to achieving your fitness goals is to create one that you truly believe that you can achieve.
  • Be ready to change: Before setting a new goal ask yourself if you are ready to make the changes needed to make the goal real. If your goal is to increase your upper body mobility and strength are you ready to strength training 2-4 times a week? On which days and time will you do it? Do you know which exercises are best for you to do or do you need to plan to get some advice?
  • Make sure that you care about the goal: This is a common pitfall that we often see with clients—creating a goal such as ‘losing 5 pounds’ that is not meaningful to them and they don’t really care about. Create a goal that has emotion and inspiration built into it as opposed to picking random weight loss numbers. A great example is “in 6 months time I am going to fit into my favourite pants which are 2 sizes too small for me right now and my husband and I are going to go out dancing to celebrate”.
